Madhya Pradesh has 2,403,832 registered MSMEs as of June 2026. That is the seventh-largest base of any Indian state or union territory, and 5.10 percent of India’s 4.72 crore Udyam registrations. The state does not run on one city. Indore leads, but it holds only about one registration in nine, and the rest of the base is spread across one of the longest district lists in the country.

How MSMEs are classified here
Every figure on this page counts enterprises registered on Udyam, the Government of India portal where a business formalises to be recognised as an MSME. Under the size limits revised with effect from 1 April 2025, a micro enterprise has investment up to 2.5 crore rupees and turnover up to 10 crore, a small enterprise up to 25 crore and 100 crore, and a medium enterprise up to 125 crore and 500 crore. A registration is a formal record, not a survey of active trade, so the numbers show where enterprises have chosen to register, which is a close read of formal economic activity but not identical to it.
Indore leads, Bhopal follows
Indore, the state’s commercial anchor rather than its capital, tops the table with 269,575 registered MSMEs, 11.2 percent of the state. Bhopal, the capital, is second at 156,004 (6.5 percent), followed by Gwalior (105,376), Ujjain (103,013) and Jabalpur (94,153).
The five largest districts together hold 30.3 percent of all registrations, and the top ten hold 44.6 percent. That is a far flatter spread than single-city states such as Karnataka, where one district alone carries a quarter of the base. Only Andhra Pradesh among the large states spreads its registrations more evenly than Madhya Pradesh does.

Indore, Ujjain, Dewas and Ratlam form the Malwa industrial belt in the state’s west. Most of the registration density and nearly all of the larger firms sit inside that belt.

A base that is almost entirely micro
Of the 2,403,832 registrations, about 2,382,720 are micro (99.12 percent), 19,918 are small (0.83 percent) and only 1,194 are medium (0.050 percent). Nationally the split is 98.88 percent micro, 1.04 percent small and 0.079 percent medium, so Madhya Pradesh carries a slightly thinner layer of small and medium firms than the country as a whole. Its Enterprise Mix, the combined small and medium share, is 0.88 percent against a national 1.12 percent.
The larger firms follow the industry. Indore holds 338 medium enterprises, far more than any other district, followed by Bhopal (136), Dhar (72), Gwalior (66) and Jabalpur (47). Dhar's place on that list reflects the Pithampur industrial area near Indore, one of the state's main manufacturing hubs.
One of the longest tails in the country
Fifty-five districts is one of the longest lists any state carries, and the shape of the distribution shows it. The median district registers about 34,800 enterprises, only four districts clear one lakh, and six sit below ten thousand. The smallest counts belong to newly created or tribal districts: Mauganj (2,921), Maihar (3,263), Pandhurna (3,283), Niwari (5,495) and Umaria (9,606). Several were carved out recently, which is why they start from a small base rather than because their economies are negligible. Beyond the Malwa belt and the major cities, the state's MSME base is a wide, shallow spread.
How Madhya Pradesh compares with its neighbours
Madhya Pradesh sits in the middle of a strong cluster, behind Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh and just behind Rajasthan and Gujarat. Chhattisgarh, carved from the same undivided state in 2000, registers under a third of its count.

What this means for businesses and policymakers
The flat distribution decides how the state can be reached. Outside Indore, Bhopal and the Malwa belt, selling to or lending to the state's MSMEs means covering a very wide geography of small, mostly micro firms, because no single city puts a large share of the base within reach. The scaled, more formal customers cluster in Indore and Pithampur. For policymakers, the long tail of small districts is where formalisation and credit access remain thinnest, and where the gap between registration and graduation into larger firms is widest.
Methodology and source
The figures come from the district-wise count of MSMEs registered on the Udyam portal, published on the Government of India open data portal at data.gov.in. We clean and reconcile the raw file to source, so each district total matches the published data exactly. Enterprises are classified micro, small or medium under the MSME definition based on investment and turnover, revised upward with effect from 1 April 2025. District names follow the latest official boundaries as they appear in the source, so districts created in the 2023 reorganisation are listed separately.
