How MSMEs are classified here
Every figure counts enterprises registered on Udyam, the Government of India portal where a business formalises to be recognised as an MSME. Under the size limits revised with effect from 1 April 2025, a micro enterprise has investment up to 2.5 crore rupees and turnover up to 10 crore, a small enterprise up to 25 crore and 100 crore, and a medium enterprise up to 125 crore and 500 crore. A registration is a formal record, not a survey of active trade, so the numbers show where enterprises have chosen to register.
No single capital of registration
Where Karnataka has Bengaluru and Telangana has Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh has no equivalent centre of gravity. Guntur (128,097), Visakhapatnam (127,315) and Ananthapur (126,244) sit almost level at the top, each with roughly 6.1 percent of the state and barely two thousand registrations separating them. Since the 2022 reorganisation that expanded the state to 26 districts, registration has spread remarkably evenly across the coastal and Rayalaseema regions.
The five largest districts hold just 29.4 percent of all registrations, the most even top five of any large state, and the top ten hold 55.6 percent.

A base that is almost entirely micro
Of the 2,084,658 registrations, about 2,066,605 are micro (99.13 percent), 17,068 are small (0.82 percent) and only 985 are medium (0.047 percent). Nationally the split is 98.88 percent micro, 1.04 percent small and 0.079 percent medium, so Andhra Pradesh carries a slightly thinner layer of larger firms than the country as a whole, with an Enterprise Mix of 0.87 percent against 1.12 percent nationally.
The larger firms cluster on the coast, where the ports and the Godavari delta industries sit. Visakhapatnam holds the most medium enterprises at 154, then Guntur (141), West Godavari (121), Krishna (109) and East Godavari (97). Visakhapatnam, the state's industrial port city, is where the heaviest and most formal manufacturing concentrates.
Coastal density, Rayalaseema and the new tribal districts
The coastal districts, Visakhapatnam, the Godavari districts, Krishna and Guntur, carry most of both the volume and the scale, while the interior Rayalaseema districts register steadily but with fewer large firms. Twenty-one of the 26 districts clear fifty thousand registrations, which is why the base reads as broad rather than deep. The bottom of the table belongs to small, mostly rural districts created in the 2022 reorganisation: Alluri Sitharama Raju (8,998) and Parvathipuram Manyam (14,289), both tribal districts carved from the northern hills, register the fewest and carry the highest micro shares, followed by Anakapalli, Bapatla and Konaseema. Their low counts reflect recent creation and rural character rather than weak activity.
How Andhra Pradesh compares with its neighbours
Andhra Pradesh sits in the middle of a strong southern cluster, behind Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and just ahead of Telangana, the other half of the old undivided state.

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, split in 2014, sit close together, with Andhra slightly ahead. Tamil Nadu and Karnataka register more. What this means for businesses and policymakers
The even spread changes the commercial calculus. No single city lets a seller reach a quarter of the state at once, so coverage means a genuinely state-wide approach across the coastal and Rayalaseema districts. The scaled, formal firms that B2B sellers and lenders want sit on the coast, around Visakhapatnam and the Godavari delta. For policymakers, the new tribal districts in the north are where formalisation and credit access run thinnest.

The figures come from the district-wise count of MSMEs registered on the Udyam portal, published on the Government of India open data portal at data.gov.in. We clean and reconcile the raw file to source, so each district total matches the published data exactly. Enterprises are classified micro, small or medium under the MSME definition based on investment and turnover, revised upward with effect from 1 April 2025. District names follow the latest official boundaries from the 2022 reorganisation as they appear in the source.
